ドイツ（ベルリン）在住のフリーランス翻訳家、
wasabiさんこと、藤沢裕子さんです。

大学卒業後、いきなりドイツに移住して
フリーランス翻訳家になったという
異色の経歴の持ち主。

「海外フリーランス養成スクール」という
サロンが人気でいらっしゃいます。

まずは、wasabiさんに英語で自己紹介を
していただきました。

３年前からベルリンで生活

――Would you introduce yourself?
（自己紹介をお願いします）

Wasabi: Yes, I am Yuko Fujisawa.
（はい、私は藤沢祐子です）

I’ve been living in Berlin for almost three years now.
（ベルリンにほぼ３年間住んでいまして）

And I work as a freelance translator in Berlin.
（ベルリンでフリーランスの翻訳家として仕事をしています）

――When did you start living in Germany?
（いつドイツ生活を始めたのですか？）

Wasabi: It was 2015.
（2015年ですね）

――Okay, like three years ago.
（３年くらい前ですよね）

Wasabi: Three years ago. Exactly three years ago.
（３年前。ちょうど３年前です）

新卒でフリーランス翻訳家に!?

Wasabi: And first I did not have any experience in translating.
（最初は翻訳の経験も何もなかったのですが）

And I moved to Berlin right after graduation of my university.
（大学を卒業後、すぐにベルリンに移住しました）

――Okay.
（へぇー）

Wasabi: And I didn’t study translation, interpretation… anything at all.
（別に翻訳も通訳も、何も学んだわけではありません）

But I just started this business by myself.
（でも、自分でビジネスを始めまして、）

And I could move to Berlin.
（そしてベルリンに移住したのです）

Because I could get clients in Japan.
（日本人でお客さんを見つけることができました）

全くの未経験でフリーランスになった方法

――How can you do that? You know, with no job experience and you become a freelancer.
（どういうことですか？ 仕事の経験も何もないのにいきなりフリーランス？）

Wasabi: I just started.
（始めちゃいましたね）

I just made a business card.
（まず名刺を作りました）

――Okay…
（なるほど）

Wasabi: With my name. As a title, freelance translator.
（名前を載せ、肩書きには「フリーランス翻訳家」）

And I went to several events or seminars.
（それでいろんなイベントやセミナーに参加しました）

And I talk to people that… “I’m a freelance translator.”
（そして自己紹介したんです。「私はフリーランスで翻訳をやっています」）

“So if you have anything that you want to translate into Japanese or English, I can do it.”
（「もし日本語か英語に訳されたいものがありましたらお手伝いできます」と）

翻訳の勉強をしたわけでも、専門性が高かったわけでもない

――Okay. At least, you majored in English?
（そうなんですね。少なくとも、大学では英語ですよね？）

Wasabi: Yes, kind of. (Laughter)
（まあ、一応…笑）

――(Laughter)

Wasabi: My major was foreign culture.
（でも専攻は外国文化でした）

――Foreign culture.
（文化の方なんですね）

Wasabi: So it is really broad… meaning I didn’t have anything like special.
（とても範囲が広いというか、何かに特化したわけでは全くありません）

I studied travel, foreign politics, social linguistics and everything that I was interested in at that time.
（観光や国際政治、社会言語学など、当時興味があったものにいろいろと手を出した感じです）

So I was really struggling to find what to do.
（ですので、何をすべきかを見つけるのに苦労しました）

そこで翻訳を選んだワケ

――Then, why translation?
（それで、なぜ翻訳なんですか？）

Wasabi: Uh, because I could maybe… no, no, no.
（理由は、というと・・・）

I could start translating because I studied English for almost 10 years at that time.
（翻訳を始めたのは、それまでにほぼ10年間英語を学んできたからですね）

So I thought maybe translation would be easy option to become a freelancer.
（フリーランスになるためには、翻訳家が難易度が低いかなと思ったのです）

That’s why I chose to become a freelance translator.
（ですので、フリーランスの翻訳家になりました）
