大学で化学を教えている、ポーランド人の
ラファオさんです。
今回は、ラファオさんが日本人と
ポーランド人を比べてみて思ったこと
についてお話していただきました。

ポーランド人が日本人から学べること
Rafal: There are many things like Polish people can learn from Japanese people.
（ポーランド人が日本人から学べることはたくさんあります）
Like, more organization and also, more like, appreciation of things that are done?
（例えば、協調性とか、感謝の気持ちなど）
Like, Japanese people will pick the trash, if they go somewhere like to an ONSEN or trip, they will always get the trash back, they will clean the house afterwards and everything.
（具体的には、日本人は温泉とか旅行とかの行った先でごみを拾ったり、持ち帰ったり、使った部屋を片付けたりします）
――Mmm.
（なるほど）
Rafal: You don’t see sadly this in Poland.
（悲しいことに、ポーランドではこの光景は見られません）
日本人がポーランド人から学べること
Rafal: And, from Polish people, Japanese people can learn to speak their minds more.
（そして、日本人はポーランド人から自分の気持ちを話すことを学べると思います）
And, don’t care always about being polite.
（あと、常に礼儀正しくする必要がないこと、）
Sometimes you have to be a little bit impolite to get what you want to say to somebody.
（人に伝えたいことがあるとき、時には少し無礼になる必要があることも）
Sometimes it’s a little bit troubling…
（たまにちょっと厄介なのですが）
For example, if, if I’m asked to do some kind of a job, and I show my results to somebody, and ask them for an opinion.
（例えば、何か仕事を頼まれたとして、その成果を見せて意見を求めたときなど）
――Mmm.
（はい）
Rafal: They will not tell you that it’s bad, because it would be like bad manners.
（失礼になるから、日本人はそれが駄目だとは言いません）
――Mmm.
（ふむ）
Rafal: So, I don’t know what’s the expression is for that but sometimes it is very troubling for people from other countries.
（このことを一言でどう表現するかはわかりませんが、外国人にとって時にとても厄介なことなのです）
Because in Europe and also in Poland we are used to speaking straight.
（なぜなら、ヨーロッパそしてポーランドではストレートに話すことに慣れているから）
If I do something wrong and you don’t like it, you say that you don’t like it.
（自分が何か間違ったことをして、あなたがそれを良くないと思ったら、あなたは気に入らないと言います）
And if you will not tell me that you don’t like it, I will not know it.
（あなたが良くないということを教えてくれなければ、私はそれを知り得ません）
No matter how many times you’ll say to me like, ah it’s good but it’s mmm, we will stand there until you tell me that it’s not good.
（「まあ、いいと思うけど、うーん」と何度言われても、良くないと言われるまでは立って待つしかありません）
I will not get it otherwise, so…
（言ってもらわないとわかりません）
ラファオが日本で戸惑ったこと
Rafal: Sometimes it’s like very problematic for me because…
（ですから、私にとってすごく難しいと感じることがあります）
When I’m staying with somebody and I ask them if I can do something but they will say like “ah, you can do this but maybe tomorrow” or something.
（誰かと一緒にいて何かをやりたいと言っても「ああ、また明日とかかな」とかなんとか言われて）
So, I’m waiting until tomorrow and then I will ask again, “can I do it?”
（だから私は明日が来るまで待って、もう一度「やっていい？」と聞きますが）
“Ah, maybe tomorrow” and…
（「うーん、明日かも」と濁される）
“No, you cannot do it,” and it’s simple. So, yeah.
（「できないよ」と言えばシンプルです）
