オイル添加剤を作る化学エンジニア

――Would you introduce yourself?
（自己紹介してくださいますか？）

Hirokazu: Okay, so… I’m Hirokazu Kiuchi.
（はい、木内洋一と申します）

Eh, so I’m a chemical engineer.
（私は化学エンジニアです）

Um, now I’m working for petroleum industry.
（現在石油工業で働いています）

――Okay.
（はい）

Hirokazu: There, to be more precise, ah… I work for additive company.
（もっと具体的に言うと、オイル添加剤の会社で働いています）

Additive… additives for passenger car.
（乗用車用のオイル添加剤です）

――Uh-huh.
（ふむふむ）

Hirokazu: And… uh… すっごい緊張するな、これ。

So, our company provide additives for passenger cars to oil companies.
（私の勤める会社では、オイル会社に乗用車用のオイル添加剤を供給しています）

Additives is a core technology for engine oil or transmission oil or gear oil… something like that.
（添加剤はエンジンオイル、トランスミッションオイル、ギアオイルといったもののコアテクノロジーなんです）

エンジンオイルはカクテルのようなもの？

Engine oil is like cocktails.
（エンジンオイルはカクテルのようなもの）

――Cocktails?
（カクテルですか？）

Hirokazu: Cocktails.
（はい、カクテルです）

Yeah, it means engine oil made from base oil and additives.
（というのも、エンジンオイルはベースオイルと添加剤から作られるのですが）

――Mmm.
（ほお）

Hirokazu: So… around 90 percent is base oil and other rest is additives.
（約90パーセントはベースオイルで、あとは添加剤です）

――So, you make them up, so you mix them up?
（では、それを作る、混ぜるお仕事ということですか）

Hirokazu: Uh, I make a formulation of additives.
（私は添加剤の調合を考えます）

――Mmm, so you enjoy mixing up the oil?
（ふむ、オイルの調合は楽しいですか）

ニーズに応じて様々なオイルを調合している

Hirokazu: Ah, so… the formulation is really good.
（そうですね、調合はとても良いですよ）

I have meetings with our customers and I catch the concept of what they want to develop.
（顧客とミーティングをして、彼らがどのようなものを開発したいかコンセプトをとらえます）

――Mmm, so they say like we want thick oil… or, smooth oil?
（濃いオイルがいいとか、滑らかなオイルがいい、とか言われるのでしょうか）

Hirokazu; Ah… yeah, kind of.
（まあ、そのような感じですね）

Oil company get the request from car company, the car company designed new type of hardwares like electric vehicle.
（オイル会社が電気自動車のような新しいタイプの車を開発した自動車製造会社からリクエストを受けます）

So, the requirement of oil is really different from conventional cars.
（ですから、従来の車のものと比べるとオイルの要件はかなり違います）

It means automatic transmission or manual transmission oil.
（従来のものというのは、オートマ車やマニュアル車のオイルのことですが）

（ふむ）

Hirokazu; So, the car manufacturers requirement is really different.
（ですから、自動車製造会社の要求はすごく変わりました）
