について伺いました。

ニューヨーク州弁護士は”New York State Attorney”

――So, you’re a New York State attorney?
（あなたはニューヨーク州弁護士なのですよね）

Ricky: Yes.
（はい）

――What’s the difference between attorney and lawyer?
（”attorney”と”lawyer”の違いは何ですか？）

Ricky: Oh, okay, that’s good question.
（良い質問ですね）

Attorney is more like professional way of calling lawyers.
（”attorney”は弁護士のより専門的な呼び名です）

――Okay.
（なるほど）

Ricky: And, when you say attorney, that means someone who is officially licensed to practice law in US.
（”attorney”と言うときは、アメリカで正式に弁護士の開業資格を得た人のことを意味します）

But, when you say lawyer, it’s more broad way of describing people who are professionals in legal world.
（でも、”lawyer”と言うときは、もっと広い意味での法律の専門家を指します）

So, when you say lawyer, they might not be necessarily an attorney or who can practice law.
（”lawyer”と言うときは、”attorney”あるいは弁護士として開業している人とは限りません）

――Mmm.
（ほお）

Ricky: Not actually licensed lawyer.
（資格のある弁護士とは限りません）

アメリカでは弁護士の開業資格がなくても”lawyer”と呼ばれる

So, my experience was you know when I was studying English in the US, when I first went there, I told them, “hey, I majored in law in Japan.”
（私の経験で言うと、私が最初に英語を勉強するためにアメリカにいたとき、周りの人に「私は日本で法律を専攻した」と言ったのですが）

And they started calling me “oh, so you’re lawer.”
（すると、「じゃあ、あなたは”lawyer”なのですね」と言われました）

They said that actually.
（そういうことです）

So, who ever you know who studied law, who actually does any legal work, they call them lawyers.
（ですから、法律を勉強したら誰でも、法律業務をする人なら”lawyer”と呼びます）

It might not be very official way, but they actually say it.
（正式な言い方ではないかもしれませんが、そう言います）

But, never say attorney just because they studied law.
（でも、法律を勉強しただけでは”attorney”とは言いません）

――Mmm.
（なるほど）

Ricky: So, the biggest difference is either or not they have license to practice law or not.
（最大の違いは、弁護士としての開業資格を有するかどうかです）

Another difference between attorney and lawyer is ah… where actually you are.
（もうひとつの違いは、どこにいるかの違いです）

So… when you say attorney, it’s more common in US.
（”attorney”という言い方はアメリカにおいてより一般的です）

If you go to UK, Australia or some other countries outside US, they don’t usually say attorney.
（イギリス、オーストラリア、や他のアメリカ以外の国に行くと普通”attorney”とは言いません）

So, speaking lawyer, I’m ah… I’m calling myself “steak attorney.”
（ちなみに、私は自分のことを”ステーキ弁護士”と呼んでいます）

「ステーキ弁護士」という別名も

――”Steak attorney”? Not “state attorney”?
（”ステーキ弁護士”ですか、”ステート弁護士”じゃなくて？）

Ricky: Not “state”, “steak”.
（ステートではありません、ステーキです）

――What do you mean?
（どういう意味ですか）

Ricky: Well, it doesn’t mean anything, it’s just a… I just made it up.
（いや、意味はありません、自分でそう呼んでいるだけです）

――What does it mean?
（ですから、どういう意味なんでしょうか）

Ricky: Okay, that means, nothing.
（まあ、何の意味もありません）

I was steak lawyer, just because I like steak.
（ステーキが好きだから”ステーキ弁護士”です）

――Like, steak, you mean like beef steaks?
（ビーフステーキとかのステーキですか）

Ricky: Beef steak.
（そう、ビーフステーキとか）

Yes, ribs, sirloin… whatever it is.
（リブ、サーロイン、なんでもいいのですが）

I love steak, I eat steak every day.
（ステーキが大好きです、毎日食べます）

――Every day?
（毎日ですか）

Ricky: Almost every day.
（ほぼ毎日）

――Wow, you’re making a lot of money.
（わあ、随分稼いでいるんでしょうね）

Ricky: Oh, no, no, no, I’m just spending too much money.
（いえいえ、使い過ぎているだけですよ）

――Ha ha ha.
（ははは…）
